SUMMARY:VMFA Lecture: Stories of an Abandoned Virginia with John Plashal
DESCRIPTION:Come experience a unique photographic journey through the beautifully decaying rural places within our state with which so many Virginians have become fascinated. Local photographer and professional storyteller John Plashal has commemorated these abandoned gems by capturing their beauty and delivering them to you in a presentation full of powerful imagery and emotional stories. Experience the “unseen” side of Virginia with all of the houses\, churches\, schools\, asylums\, diners\, and secret societies that have been “frozen in time” and now documented and photographed in Mr. Plashal’s coffee table book titled “A Beautifully Broken Virginia.” This talk is sure to satisfy your curiosities and captivate your imagination with exploration tips and photography advice. Appreciate them now . . . for soon they will be gone . . . but still\, they stand . . . beautiful . . . but broken. This is a free public event. Wine and refreshments will be provided. This program has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is supported\, in part\, by the Paul Mellon Endowment and the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.

SUMMARY:Ceramics Date Night with Phillip Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a date night you’ll actually remember? Spend an evening getting your hands dirty and discovering the magic of the potter’s wheel. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary\, planning a first date\, catching up with friends\, or simply trying something new\, Ceramic Date Night offers a creative experience that’s equal parts fun\, relaxing\, and surprisingly addictive. Your evening begins with a tour of our ceramics studio and gallery\, followed by a demonstration from one of The Art Center’s talented Resident Artists. Then it’s your turn. With plenty of guidance and encouragement\, you’ll sit down at the wheel and create your own pottery from clay. Most participants spend about 90 minutes on the wheel and create two to three pieces during their first session. No experience is necessary—just a willingness to try something new and have fun. Once your pieces are complete\, you’ll choose from more than 60 beautiful glazes to give your work its final color and character. Our staff will then fire and finish your pottery\, and 4-6 weeks later\, you’ll return to pick up your handmade creations—lasting reminders of a memorable evening. \nWho Is It For? SUMMARY:Guardians of Democracy: Judicial Independence and the Balance of Power Panel Discussion at James Madison's Montpelier
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Article III Coalition\, a bipartisan group of former federal judges appointed by presidents of both parties\, for a timely conversation on the role of an independent judiciary in American democracy. Drawing on decades of experience from the federal bench\, these distinguished judges will discuss why judicial independence\, the separation of powers\, and the rule of law remain essential safeguards of the constitutional system\, and what is at stake when those principles are challenged. \nFeatured participants include Judge John W. Bissell (U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey)\, Judge Bernice B. Donald (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit)\, and Judge Paul R. Michel (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit). This program offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from former federal judges at a moment when questions about the courts are increasingly central to national debate. \nDoors open at 3:30pm for refreshments available for purchase. The panel discussion begins at 4pm\, followed by a cocktail reception.\nTickets: $25 nonmembers\, $20 members (members use the walk code provided in your acknowledgement letter)\nVIRTUAL Option – Register for the Free virtual event if you are unable to come.

SUMMARY:Book Signing with Roger Courtenay In partnership with Spelled ink Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Meet Roger Courtenay\, the author of Coming in to View. This book signing is free to attend and open to the public. Coming in to View: Explorations of Radical Shifts in Beauty Outdoors Nature\, and the world around us\, is changing\, evolving\, rapidly\, fluidly. Metamorphosing in front of our eyes with climate\, political\, social\, economic and environmental upheaval. Our personal appreciation of landscapes encompasses all those places we may have touched\, visited\, or seen. Inevitably\, a radical shift in our notions of beauty in the outdoors is underway across all types\, from inner city to wilderness. Landscapes confront and influence our physiological\, psychological\, and aesthetic relationship with the natural world. We question what we see. How does the ambiguity of the present and future view relate to past appreciation? What does the future hold for our love of the outdoors? Environmental\, artistic\, design and planning realities are already conditioning responses across the planet’s amazing landscapes. This book’s narrative arc of 17 separate essays travels through landscapes from the National Mall in Washington DC to the remote highlands of Mongolia. Uncovering the strains and indications of change in what we now experience outdoors\, anywhere\, everywhere\, whether familiar or unfamiliar\, these essays seek to open our eyes to new prospects of landscape appreciation.
