Swing into Spring in Orange County!

Spring has officially sprung in Central Virginia! With warmer days on the horizon, it’s time to pull out the golf clubs, schedule a tee time, and get out on the green. Orange County boasts three fantastic courses to choose from – each uniquely different – so you can spend your days working on your swing or practicing your putt. Whether you are flying solo or grabbing a friend for a round of golf – Orange County courses will not disappoint!

Meadows Farm is an affordable course filled with rolling hills and picturesque countryside on the site of a former, pure-bred cattle farm. This 268-acre course was designed with 27 holes and each hole was intentionally crafted with a distinct character to challenge the average golfer.  There are elevated trees; bounce bunkers; rock and railroad tie walls, bunkers waiting to catch an errant shot; an island green; a stunning waterfall; and seven water crossings all making Meadows Farm one of the best golf courses in Virginia. Let Meadows Farms Golf Course be your next golf destination.

Somerset Farms Golf Course is located in eastern Orange County, Virginia, and lies on the historic Somerset Farm property along the banks of the Rapidan River.  With views of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the northern horizon Somerset Farms retains much of its history and picturesque landscape.  The semi-private/public golf course winds through gently rolling woodlands and wetlands while offering unspoiled views of the Virginia countryside. Somerset Farms’ 6,500-plus-yard course offers 18 signature holes with traditional and links style play. A slope rating of 138 makes the layout one of the most challenging in Virginia, yet four sets of tees provide “play-ability” and challenge for golfers of every level. The course was designed by Tulsa-based architect Jerry Slack, who masterfully incorporated the heritage of Somerset Farm’s natural terrain into the design.

Lake of the Woods offers public tee-times at the private, 18-hole course in Locust Grove. The picturesque, PGA course was carved into the woods of oaks and pines and no two fairways adjoin. The course is designed with a variety of slopes, sand, and water, and can accommodate all levels of play. Adults and children alike enjoy testing their skills on the fairways and greens. The front nine has a unique set of tees, called Family Tees, that represent a Par 3 Golf course with yardages that are the same as the famous Master’s Par 3 course in Augusta, GA. Golf course maintenance is comprehensive and performed year-round to keep the course in top playing condition for residents and visitors alike.

If you are looking for fun activity for the whole family, check out the Orange County Disc Golf Course! The disc golf course is free and open to the public. For those unfamiliar with the sport, disc golf is similar to traditional golf in that a player makes successive attempts to finish a hole in the fewest number of tries. Instead of balls and clubs, disc golf is played with discs of varying design, which are analogous to the different clubs in traditional golf. Instead of ground holes, players attempt to land discs in specially designed, chain-laden baskets. The course is located in the Thomas E. Lee Industrial Park, at 14111 Litchfield Drive, Orange, VA 22960. It is an 18-hole recreational course, with predominantly open terrain and mostly par 3 holes. Loaner discs available through Orange County Parks and Recreation.

Orange County offers numerous fun outdoor recreation activities throughout the County. Gordonsville Ice House and Chateau MerrillAnne both offer Bocce! Enjoy a game in the biergarten at Gordonsville Ice House followed by some delicious fried chicken! If you ever wanted to learn how to play Bocce, Chateau MerrillAnne is offering Bocce 101, where they will go over the rules of the game and have you ready to play in no time! Or, plan trip to Sweet Vines Farm Winery and play a game of giant chess while enjoying a glass of wine.  Outdoor games and fun abound in Orange County, Virginia!
