Can you smell the pumpkin spice? Fall is in the air in Orange County, Virginia, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the chill. From corn mazes to festivals, Orange County has plenty to offer when it comes to celebrating autumn.
The largest corn maze this side of the Mississippi, Liberty Mills Farm corn maze clocks in at a massive 33 acres. Lucky for the directionally challenged, Liberty Mills divides the maze into 4 separate trails so you can choose your own adventure. Will you test your wits with the trivia maze or test your determination with the hole punch maze? Maybe you’ll even dare to try the flashlight maze after dark! Liberty Mills also offers hay rides, pumpkin picking, and a farm market, so if you prefer to do your mazes on paper you’re still in for a good time. The maze is open through November 11, so get your family, besties, or coworkers together for this “farmtastic” adventure.
If you enjoy the small, rustic, family owned wineries, the Montpelier Wine Trail is for you. Come discover all of the wine trail’s members during their Fall Festival, Saturday October 5th. Enjoy tastings from all seven of the wine trail members as well as amazing food, live music and craft vendors.
Family fun also comes in the form of the Gordonsville Fall Festival, held this year on October 5th, at the Fireman’s Fairgrounds. A day full of vendors, crafters, food groups, and entertainment for all ages. The festival will have many locals cooking up their signature dishes, as well as crafters and artists showing off their handmade work.
What’s better on a cool fall day than fleece and wool? The 32nd Annual Fall Fiber Festival features workshops, displays, animal exhibits, sheep dog trials, hands-on demonstrations, a fleece sale, fiber and crafts vendors, music and more! This event is held on the grounds of James Madison’s Montpelier and begins October 5th on the same day as the Gordonsville Fall Festival, so why not enjoy both? The fun continues Sunday, October 6th. Come on out and celebrate this Orange County tradition!
If you’re looking for a little more “adult” in your fall activities, look no further than Orange County Chamber of Commerce’s Chili and Brewfest at the Orange County Fairgrounds on October 12th. Featuring live music by local band The Worx, beer tastings from local breweries, a chili cook-off, and a Cornhole Tournament; this fest will satisfy the manliest of fall cravings. You can even help judge the chili cook-off! Best of all, your tasting ticket includes a miniature tasting mug that you can take home as a souvenir. Though there will be beer tastings, this event is family friendly.
Rounding out the fall season, do not miss the 85th Annual Montpelier Hunt Races on Saturday, November 2nd. A tradition dating back to 1929, the horse races are a must for history buffs and equestrian enthusiasts alike. Start with the Jack Russell Terrier races and enjoy tailgating, a hat contest, catering, and wine all day. Dolley Madison would be proud to see all the hustle and bustle at Montpelier!
